It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
our sweet, amazing father on April 10, 2026 at the age of 99.
He was admired for his many skills and treasured by everyone who knew him.

He is deeply missed by his wife Maria Jose, and he is lovingly
remembered by his children and grandchildren.

He was your typical Portuguese immigrant. He migrated to France in
1962, looking to escape the subsistence living in his home town. In
France he honed his trade as a Cement Mason. In 1968 he decided to
follow his brothers to Canada in search of new opportunities and a
better future for his young family.

His initial work in Canada was a jack of all trades working in the
orchards of East Kelowna. He developed allergies to the chemicals used
in the orchards, so he thought he would get back into the work he loved
best. The opportunity to move to Vancouver came when the oldest son
decided that Vancouver was where he wanted to go to University. João
and Maria eventually settled in Vancouver where they bought their first
Canadian home, and setup a stable and loving environment where their
children could flourish.

He carried forward his father’s determination, strength and strong
principles – honest, loyal, and steady. He was not one to seek attention
or speak loudly. He led by example, showing his love through quiet acts,
consistency, and an unwavering commitment to his family. He took pride
in his chosen profession and was recognized for his dedication and
steadiness.

At the centre of his life was his beloved wife Maria. Their bond,
endured 72 years that was based on partnership and a lifetime of shared
experiences.

Though his passing leaves a profound void, there is peace in knowing he
lived a full and meaningful life. His quiet strength, steady presence,
and unwavering character will always be remembered.

A service to honour João’s life will take place at Our Lady of Fatima
Catholic Church on April 30, 2026 at 11:30am.

In lieu of flower the family kindly requests that donations be made to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Tribute :Tio João was a stoic, steady presence—hardworking, positive, and thoughtful. He showed his care in quiet ways, like always remembering to call me on my birthday. It was a simple gesture, but it meant a lot and spoke to who he was.He will be deeply missed, and remembered for his strength, kindness, and commitment to supporting his family including sharing his great smelt fishing hauls.

Tribute :Tio João visited Portugal often. We would sit in his backyard in Casegas at night, drinking tea, eating Tia’s biscuits, and listening to his stories about Canada, life in the old days, and hard work. When I visited him in Canada, I rode in the famous Volvo and witnessed how ruthlessly he protected his garden from butterflies. He was kind, strong, and had a cheeky, knowing smile that felt younger than his years. The last time I saw that smile in person was in the nursing home, where he made sure to demonstrate he could still speak French! The opportunities he created for his family will blossom for generations. As will the memory of what a great man he was. My thoughts are with Tia, his siblings, children and grandchildren.Big hug from Iceland,Mário
