Carlos Barata was the first-born child of Maria de Lourdes Brás Barata and Joaquim Mendes
Barata. Born on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 1969, he was welcomed as a precious gift and
deeply loved from the very beginning. Carlos will be profoundly missed by his parents; his sister,
Paula; his brother-in-law, Mario; his nephew, Ben; his niece, Victoria; and many friends and
extended family.
He was born in France, came to Canada in 1974, and lived most of his life in Greater
Vancouver. A few years after graduating from high school, he went to work for BC Rail,
surprising no one, given his love for trains. He held various jobs in the almost 25 years that he
worked at BC Rail/CN Rail, but his favourite job was driving the speeder on his regular route,
the Squamish/Sea to Sky Highway. Later in life he obtained security training and worked as a
security guard at various locations in Vancouver and Burnaby.
Carlos will be remembered as a loyal and generous individual who deeply cared for his family,
friends, and those in need. His faith, humour, and love for collecting treasures reflected a unique
and free-spirited character who touched many people’s lives in small and large ways.
