Dr. Marcel Dvorak, 65, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his home in Vancouver
on May 9 th , 2025. His death comes ten months after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Marcel was
born August 15 th , 1959, in Toronto, Ontario. He is predeceased by his father, Vladimir, and
survived by his mother, Helen, and his three siblings: Francis, Vicky, and Marie.
An internationally renowned orthopaedic spine surgeon, Dr. Dvorak’s surgical expertise,
pioneering research, and visionary leadership solidified his position as a global leader in spine
trauma. Through his clinical care, Dr. Dvorak helped thousands of patients; through his teaching
and mentorship, he influenced even more physicians; and through his groundbreaking research,
he advanced the care of countless patients internationally. Dr. Dvorak received many prestigious
awards and accolades which reflected his remarkable career, however, most meaningful to him
was the importance of improved patient care and the relationships he established—as friend,
colleague, mentor, and leader. His tremendous legacy and monumental impact will endure
through those who he inspired and influenced.
Beyond his career, Marcel lived an extraordinary life filled with raucous family gatherings,
eclectic hobbies, sincere relationships, and a profound faith. A truth-seeker, he pursued wisdom
not only through the lens of science, but also through his devout Catholic faith and thoughtful
engagement with philosophy and theology. Marcel was a boisterous and loyal friend; a
phenomenal and playful father; and a devoted husband whose wife, Sue, was his equal partner
and confidant in all things. He was an avid reader, a music lover, and a committed lifelong
learner, obtaining his MBA in 2017. His passion for all things mechanical extended beyond cars,
motorcycles, and boats— it culminated in him earning his pilot's licence in recent years.
Marcel’s integrity and strength of character was impactful to all who knew him. He was deeply
committed to honouring his values and lived with rare alignment between his beliefs and actions.
In both his professional endeavours and personal life, he strove to live with clarity and
conviction. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Sue, and their six children: Emily, Adam
(wife, Lewisia), Madeline, Eva, Levi, and Veronica.
