Born in Ravensburg, Germany and raised in Zipplingen, Frank was 2nd eldest of 7 children. At 13 he realized he wanted to work with his hands and left home and high school to start an apprenticeship as an Artistic Blacksmith. At the age of 19 he moved to Thalwil Switzerland and began his career as a journeyman for Fischer Company, where he worked until 1956. During his time there he was asked to help a young woman who had locked herself out of her house. He fell under her spell and when Angela moved to take a job in Vancouver, BC, he quickly followed. In June of 1957 they were married and shortly after started their family of 5 children.
Frank and Angela purchased a home and shop on Edmonds St, Burnaby in 1959 and he started Helvetica Ironworks where he worked until his 83rd year.
Frank’s life was his work, he loved his craft and especially loved new and challenging projects. Always a perfectionist there was no compromising on quality no matter how big or small the job. The people he created works for frequently became life-long customers and friends; though even being a good customer wouldn’t get you ahead in the queue. His backlog of work of projects was measured more in years than in weeks or months, “You mean you want it this Christmas?” Regardless of how busy he was, Frank could never turn anyone needing a small repair away, even if it put him further behind. The lights frequently shone late on Edmonds St.
Survived by children Frank, Anita, Christie and Rick; siblings Hilde, Heine, Bernd and Roswitha; and many nieces, nephews and loving grandchildren. Predeceased by wife Angela, sister Elisabeth, brother Anton and son Bernie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 3rd at 12:30pm Gardens of Gethsemani Chapel 15694 32 Ave, Surrey.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Foyer Maillard for their kind and caring treatment. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Societe du Foyer Maillard”. Foyer Maillard is a non-profit housing society and registered charity.
