Guiomar Natividade Medeiros da Costa was born and raised in Santa Cruz das Flores Island in Flores, Portugal. She was the youngest and last surviving of 13 children in her family. She was predeceased by her husband José Melo (2006) and her eldest son José Luís (2014).

She is survived by children; José António (Fatima), José Fernando (Angela), Maria Madalena (Keith), Maria de Lurdes,(Jay) and George. She is also survived by grandchildren Jamie (Elaine), Priscilla, Nicole , Jillian and Anthony. Also by great-grandchildren Vincent, Cruz and Tiago. She will be very sadly missed by all her direct descendants.
Mom came to Canada with five children in 1967 and George came along soon after. She worked hard to make a life for her family in a new country. She was employed at the Bayshore Inn for many years and enjoyed great friendships with other Portuguese staff members. She took the initiative to get her drivers license and buy her own car and fully enjoyed that freedom. She loved her home in East Vancouver and spent many happy hours taking care of the plants especially the flowers. She was an expert with sewing, crocheting and knitting and in retirement, she made hundreds of afghans given to family, friends and charities.
She had volunteered at the Youthville Seniors Home as the Sewing Lady for many years and a 75+ time blood donor. She enjoyed the seniors’ activities at the Cedar Cottage Neighborhood House and helped in the kitchen at events at the Portuguese Church. She made friends everywhere she went in life at work and in the community. She will be greatly missed.
