Obituaries

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband and father, Henrique
Dutra, on December 4, 2023 at the age of 89.

Born on January 31, 1934 in Ribeira Funda, Faial, Azores, Portugal, Henrique was the fifth child of 12
siblings. He spent most of his childhood working the fields with his family, and at the age of 12, he lost
his mother during childbirth.

Henrique was a hard worker and had many skills. In 1957 he immigrated to Canada and found work
helping to build Highway 1 between Revelstoke to Golden BC. In later years, he worked as a barber in
downtown Vancouver. At the age of 30, Henrique married Maria Lidia, and 6 years later had their only
child Joyce. In 1975 Henrique got his dream job working for the City of Vancouver where he stayed until
he retired.

Henrique had a funny sense of humor, loved singing, dancing, and music, and would often play his
harmonica when many of his friends, neighbors, and co-workers would drop by his home for a haircut in his basement.

During his retirement, Henrique was always ready to help or would look for ways to keep himself busy.
He would fix or make things in the garage, tend to his lawn and flowers in the front garden, or maintain
his many vegetables and grape vine in the back.

In his spare time, he would go for long walks in the neighborhood striking up conversations with random people or stopping to chat with friends.  As years went by, Henrique became forgetful and later developed dementia, but never lost his zest for life even singing Christmas songs the day before he passed.

Henrique had a heart of gold and loved his family. He will be dearly missed by his wife, daughter, family
and friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him, but he forever lives on in our hearts.
