With great sadness we announce the passing of Maria do Ceu Ferreira Gomes. Born in Trandeiras, Portugal, she came to Vancouver in 1958 to join her husband, Armindo Gomes, with her their three small daughters, Maria Emilia, Palmira, and Deena. A fourth daughter Bica was born in 1960, the same year “Mama” Gomes, as she was known to her many customers, opened the grocery store on Union Street in Strathecona. Maria do Ceu will be remembered as a smiling, kind hearted woman who took seriously feeding her loved ones and the people who came to her store. Many will remember Mama Gomes’ bread, sandwiches and roast chicken, famous throughout Vancouver. She will be greatly missed by her large extended family, including four grand children, two great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and in Portugal.. She was predeceased by her grand-daughter Palmira Gomes Boutillier. Please join the Gomes, McNeill and Brouwer families in remembering our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (1423 East 13th Avenue) on Monday, December 4, 2017 Prayers are scheduled for 10:00 am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. There will be a reception in her honour following the funeral Mass in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
