Maria “Joana” Araujo (nee Sousa) passed away peacefully on the morning of July 15, 2016 at the age of 74 at Surrey Memorial Hospital after a long struggle with diabetes. Joana was born on January 9, 1942 in Lomba da Maia, São Miguel, Portugal to Emelia Sousa Soares and José De Sousa Andre Jr. Predeceased by her sisters Octavia, Emelia, brothers Manuel and José. Survived by her husband João Pereira, son João Manuel, daughter Suzete, daughter-in-law Paula, son-in-law Denny, her beautiful grandchildren Jordan, Kayla, Chantel , Savana and older sister Natalia of Montreal. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and neighbours both at home and abroad. She married João, the love of her life and moved to Vancouver BC in 1969 where together they lived and raised a beautiful family. Joana was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a very hard worker employed at the North Vancouver Fish Cannery until her retirement. She and her husband enjoyed spending their retirement years at home in Surrey, Kelowna and their homeland of Portugal. She loved to cook, spend time with her family and friends playing bisca, a good laugh watching Jerry Lewis and Charlie Chaplin movies and the shenanigans of her favourite Charlie Brown character “Snoopy.” Viewing will be held at our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, 10460 139 Street, Surrey, B.C. on July 22nd from 9:00-9:50 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Valley View Cemetery 14644 72nd Street, Surrey BC
