Sally Teresa Wong
黃廖秀珍
(June 26, 1946 – March 27, 2024)
Sally Wong was born Liu Sau Chun (廖秀珍) on June, 26 1946 in Hong Kong. Her father John Liu On Wah (廖安華) ran a successful English school and along with her mother Mary Chui Chi Kit (徐志潔), there was a busy household of five kids.  Anthony, Louis, Sally, Peter and Fanny were in part of Hong Kong close to the old Tiger Balm Gardens on Tai Hang Road in Wanchai.

Sally attended St. Francis’ Canossian School and helped with her father’s school.  A graduate from Hong Kong University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1968, Sally started her career as a social worker in Hong Kong.

She was married in 1971 to Lawrence Ting-Kwok Wong (黃定國). The family immigrated to Vancouver in 1974. When boys Leo and Solomon were old enough, Sally restarted her professional career and worked at the UBC Alma Mater Society as well as the Departments of Forestry and Computer Science.

Sally was predeceased by her beloved husband Lawrence who passed in 2011.  Both were active in Catholic causes throughout the Vancouver region. As well, Sally and Lawrence enjoyed travels with pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Portugal as well as trips to various points in Asia.

Sally is survived by her two siblings Peter and Fanny, two sons, daughters-in-law Flora and Vi, six grandkids Gabrielle, Nathan, Domi, Catherine, Xavier-Lawrence and Zach-Logan.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish (1430 W. 38th Avenue, Vancouver) on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 11:00 am.  Burial will follow at Gardens of Gethsemani in Surrey.

Tribute :Sally and I met in Oakridge Mall when Sally lost control of her scooter and ran into myself and another mall patron. I stopped everything I was doing, to help Sally. I helped Sally get back to her apartment. We became friends after that. We were about to be married and Sally was so happy for us. She said she missed her husband and loved when people got married. She had quite the sense of humour and made me laugh a bunch. We stayed in touch for a while and had lovely phone conversations and my husband and I even went to visit her one more time before we lost touch. At that visit, Sally gave us a wedding gift of a wooden musical ornament with a wedding cake style topper on it. We were officially newlyweds. After losing touch, we later found out that she moved into senior housing because I was driving for HandyDart and she was one of my passengers! I was so happy to see her that day. We hugged and both just gushed with joy at seeing each other that way. While she was my passenger, she was her usually jolly self and we joked with each other. A while later, she surprised us with a phone call because for some reason, we could no longer reach her by calling her. We liked to check in with her to see how she was doing and to just chat and listen to her tell her stories and sing to us. She loved singing. I loved chatting with Sally on the phone and she loved chatting with us. I am sad to hear of her passing and relieved that she can rest now. Sally was a lovely lady and I am so glad I got to experience her driving into my leg at the mall that day because I got to find a friend in her. May she rest in peace.
