Passed away peacefully with his family beside him on September 15, 2018. Shane is survived by his wife Lisa, son Oliver, step-children Marah, Ben and Jacob, parents Paul and Maria, brother Glenn (Brenda) and sister Michelle (Jeff), and nephews and nieces Devon (Hannah), Nathan (Emmalei), Brielle, Sophia and Isabella.

Shane was born in Surrey on December 7, 1973, as one of 57 2nd generation Dutch descendants of the Van Vliet and Terlaak families that immigrated from the Netherlands in the 50’s and 60’s. Shane had a wonderful childhood with a strong faith and deep family ties that brought so many of his aunts, uncles and cousins together on a weekly basis. He attended Sunshine Hills Elementary School in North Delta before his family moved to South Surrey, where he finished elementary school at Kensington Prairie. He made many lifelong friends at both schools, but it was those unforgettable high school years
attending St. Thomas More Collegiate where Shane left a legacy of memories as
an incredible friend and all-star basketball player. His playing career led him to a
brief coaching stint at STMC, leading the Knights to the basketball provincials in 1996.
Shane’s post-secondary years earned him a diploma in construction management from BCIT,
which guided him to his successful career. As a general contractor, Shane was instrumental in
the success of numerous projects in the Lower Mainland. He loved sports and could debate
endlessly about his favourite pro teams and athletes, but Shane relished most the opportunity
to tee it up with good friends and family on any golf course. Above everything, though,
Shane was a loving husband and father. His family was so clearly the greatest priority in
his life, and while he so naturally brought them all laughter, he was instinctive about teaching
the kids right from wrong. We lost our amazing and gifted gentle giant too early, but Shane
made more people laugh and smile in his 44 years than most do in a 100-year lifetime.
When you think of Shane Van Vliet, a smile forms on your face, so please take time out of
your day to laugh (or snort) out loud to honour this amazing individual… till we meet again.
Service will be held at Good Shepherd Church, 2250 – 150th street Surrey, B.C. on
Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11:00am. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to
